Have you any idea what kind of trees were used for crucifixion?
It does have a bearing on whether or not Jesus, and the pressed man, walked the way to Golgotha carrying just the cross member, or the full cross.
Some hard woods are very heavy, whereas pine is relatively light. It would require an extremely strong man to carry a full cross from a tree like apple, for example.
I have read, some authorities think, the crucified's hands (or wrists) were nailed to the cross member on the ground and then the man and cross member, were 'winched' up, to later nail the feet to the upright. So the man to die was hanging in space until the patabalun (I think that is the right word?) was slotted onto the upright, which already was fixed in the ground.
If it was the cross member only that was carried, stauros, as Don mentioned, would fit ok. Any thoughts?
What a barbaric method of punishment.
