I think you have a point that JWs fresh out of the WTS may feel more comfortable with Dawn types at least in the short term. However, I think the Free (Berean) Bible Students are definitely the way to go in the long term. I spent a year with the Dawn and benefited from it, but got tired of "Pastor Russell said this, said that..." We need to get to Christ alone and the bible and not be beholden to men or organizations, and the Bereans have this figured out well. They also stick, for the most part, to a biblial unitarian Christology and other beliefs exJWs would find comfortable.
Yes, you are correct that many brethren attend both conferences, but there is a tension: the Dawner's are Pastor Russell all the way and the Bereans are not. But many are good friends and some even give talks at each other's meetings.
